The Sybilline Mountains National Park

The Sibilline Mountains, a mountain chain in the very heart of Italy that rises up to a height of 2,476 m. at mount Vettore, are a territory where magic, nature, history and local culture have combined to form a unique and unforgettable reality.

Here, in the kingdom of the legendary Sybil, the Sybilline Mountains National Park (approximately 70,000 hectares) was established in 1993 to safeguard the natural environment, promote sustainable socio-economic development and encourage its widespread enjoyment so as to create a "park for everyone".

The wolf, the golden eagle, the hawk and many endemic species are only the most obvious signs of the biological diversity and richness which, along with the charm of the abbeys and medieval townships, scattered like a crown along the slopes of the mountain range, have helped to form a timelessly enchanting world where time seems to have stood still, enchanted by the exceptional beauty of this area.

The park provides a genuine opportunity to reassert the values that underly the naturalistic, cultural and historical identity of the Sybillines and to assure the district's rational and enduring development, in full awareness that this territory is the result of an attentive and painstaking endeavour, that must be appreciated and valorised, to integrate the forces of nature and the work of mankind, and which must be passed down to future generations as such.

The legend says that in the Sybil's cave, on the mountain that bears her name, lived "the famous prophetess who seldom reveals her secrets to others ". Wizards and wandering knights from all over Europe journeyed here in the hope of gaining secret knowledge from the Sybil's oracular pronouncements.

There are many Park Houses that can provide information, documentation, guided tours, activities linked to and in the park, presentations and demonstrations for visitors.
